I’ve dealt with clogged pores for a whole year then got rid of it all in a month. This is what I’ve learned about skin care and how I cleared up my skin.

IMG_3230 + BEFORE + AFTER

Find The Cause.

When we’re dealing with acne, the first thing we should always do is find out why we’re breaking out. Sometimes this is hereditary and it can’t be helped but other times, your products and/or your diet is the problem.

For the past year, I’ve dealt with clogged pores because of this combination. It all started when I tried out the spin brush that many people raved about. Prior to using the brush, I had clear skin but after using it, my skin became dry, my pores were clogged, and the texture changed dramatically. (Damn it, curiosity! I’m sure the brush works for some people but not for me.) Immediately, I stopped using it but I was left to repair the damage.

Know Your Skin Type.

To repair my skin’s damage, I had to find a way to restore the ph balance. At the time, my skin felt dry so… I’m supposed to buy products for dry skin, right?  Wrong. By purchasing dry skin products for my oily skin type, I made the condition of my skin worst and saw no improvements. Still, I tested with some more dry skin products until finally, I learned; we MUST use the products that are made for our skin type no matter what! Our skin TYPE doesn’t really change, only the STATE of it does so use products that are made for your skin type! Don’t confuse it with its current condition.  I wasn’t aware of this until I visited an esthetician, who extracted my pores and exfoliated dead skin (Esthetician is optional).  After getting a facial, I knew I had to change my skin products.

Considering my skin type: acne prone, oily, and extremely sensitive, I researched and bought appropriate products then threw out my old ones.

I’ve found that a simple 3-step routine works best with my skin.

My 3-step Skin Care Routine

  1. Wipe makeup off with Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water
  2. Cleanse with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
  3. Moisturize with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
  4. Sleep

That’s it.  I’ve been consistent with this routine for 2 month and my skin texture has dramatically improved.  When I first started this routine, I saw improvements within a week.  These products have literally worked wonders for me and they’re all very gentle. If you have the same skin type and problem with clogged pores like I did, I recommend trying this routine for a month.  All of these products are available at Walgreens.

Improve Your Diet.

Our skin also needs help from within. Drink more water, eat more veggies, and cut back on processed sugar. I used to eat chocolate everyday and drink very little water. It made me break out a lot.  Now, I only eat chocolate every once in a while and drink 4-6 bottles of water a day.  My skin has improved SO much.

It’s been 2 months since I’ve kept this routine and here’s the result of my skin (no filter)

My Advice on Skin Care:

  • Use the right products for your skin
  • Cleanse your face before sleeping at night
  • Moisturize
  • Cut back on processed sugar
  • Drink water
  • Exfoliate once a month to remove dead skin so your products can really work in your skin
  • Don’t try out too many products or change it too quickly
  • Don’t try out any products if you don’t need it in the first place (lesson learned)
  • Keep your skin care routine SIMPLE and CONSISTENT

  1. Flawlesssss 😍 Cetaphil really does work for almost everybody. Whenever my cousin break out he will always use Cetaphil. He was the one who recommended me to use their lotion, since I don’t use any type of facial cleanser (I’m lazy asf T-T).

About drinking water…only problem about me drinking 3 bottles of water a day is that it I have to pee literally every 20min. #smallbladderstruggle 😭

Cetaphil is amazing! Kyle uses it too but for dry skin. And OMG same problem. That’s the only downside with drinking water lol.

  2. Hi Hang!!

Ahh you’re so gorgeous 😍 and I’ve been following you for so long on instagram and this is my first time checking out your blog, and I love it!!! Hehe i really love how you pointed out about the importance of a balanced diet as part of a good skin care regimen, and I was wondering if you could maybe do a post about your diet and what you eat on the daily/go-to snacks and foods? I love to be mindful of what I put in my body, but as a college nursing student, I find myself turning to mac n cheese, ramen, and candies so often ;___; especially during finals/midterms!

    Thank you 🙂

      Hi Sammi 🙂

Tysm! I really appreciate it!! I don’t think I could do a post on my diet because it’s not very healthy ahaha. I think we should all eat what we want but in small proportions and don’t over do it. I used to eat sooo much chocolate and candy but I don’t really crave them anymore. I’ve replaced them with raw bell pepper, carrots, clementines, grapes, basically any fruit or veggie, and almonds as snacks now ^_^

Try eating less of mac n cheese, ramen, and etc replace them with fruit that you like. I know its hard when you’re studying and stressing but think about how great you’ll feel afterwards!

  3. Wasn’t expecting anything before this read but after doing research on the hydro boost gel I decided to try it. Thank you 🙏🏻

    • Hang

No problem! There’s a water gel and a gel cream that looks exactly the same though so make sure you read up on both before purchasing. I use the water gel. ^_^

  4. Hey Hang! Love your post. Can you do a blog post about what you do to stay fit? Your usual diet and exercise routine? Thanks!

    • Hang

I’m actually still working on my diet and exercise routine. Once I find something that works for me, I’ll definitely share!

  5. I use Cetaphil to wash my face too.. might aswell try the hydro boost gel!👍🏼 I’m a fan of yours hang!! Everytime I see your pictures on instagram I just cant stop straring at them😭😍 – _kaehlani

  6. So beautiful! I have the same skin type as you. I invested a lot of money into buying Korean skincare products and now I’m doubting if i should use all those products or just keep it simple like you.

    • Hang

I’m a huge fan of Korean skincare! I don’t recommend trying out or using too many new products at the same time though. If you break out, you wouldn’t know which product was the problem so use only one new product at a time if you want to experiment. I really recommend keeping it simple with like 3-4 products.

  7. It’s amazing, the same results happened to my skin about a month ago when I decided to try a cleansing, spinning brush and some blackhead cleanser. I’ve always had skin discoloration but it worse now and I’ve really been eating bad. I really needed this. Thank you! (Btw i love your blog)

    • Hang

OMG I had skin discoloration too, especially on my forehead like a line straight up in the middle. I didn’t notice this until now but the discoloration is gone! I hope this routine will work for you as much as it did for me! Tysm for tuning into my blog ☺️

  8. Hey Hang!

I started getting so many clogged pores, but some of them would come to a head so now I have a mix of both clogged pores and the typical white heads. Did you ever have this problem?! Also, do you think getting the extractions helped? I’ve been on edge deciding if I should try to clear it out on my own or get a facial. My face cleared up in January/February but something happened and broke it out so much again and my self esteem went down the drain 🙁 I just want them gone by prom. 🙁 Thanks!! (I’ve been following you for forever, can I just say that I love you and you’re absolutely stunning?!) (Also have you tried the Belif Aqua Bomb, i’m currently using it but wondering if I should switch to the moisturizer you mentioned or keep using it 🤔)

    • Hang

      Hey babe!

Sorry, I haven’t had that problem that you’re having :/. I don’t recommend getting an extraction done before prom bc your skin will get worse before it will look better. The extractions will bruise, scar, and some new pimples will show up. It’s like a purging phase that will take a while to heal so I don’t recommend it before prom.

Do you remember what you did in January/February? Did u change something up in March? I usually note food or products that would break me out or if my skin looks better than usual, I would note what I did the previous day and keep that routine up. It helps with figuring out what happened.

As for switching product, there’s some things I would consider before doing that like… how long have you used that product? Has it been working for you? Does the Hydro Boost fit your skin type? Read the reviews on the product I use first to make sure it fits your skin type and needs. I haven’t used the Belif Aqua Bomb but I researched it and it’s a gel cream… I usually prefer water based gel because it’s more lightweight and suits my needs. Gels are too much for my skin.

Also!!! I totally understand how acne affects our confidence but please remember that you are not your skin! Acne is temporary and it’ll go away! Stress will make it worse so forget about what’s on your face. Everyone has pores, acne, and etc. it’s normal. Don’t be so hard on yourself about it because everyone has it.

For prom, I know you’ll still look beautiful so don’t even worry about the pores! I recommend not over caring for your skin either bc I notice that’s what causes the problem for me. Retrace your steps from Jan & Feb. Find out what’s the problem.

  9. what about your haircare? do you have any diy masks for skin/hair?

    • Hang

Honestly, I just go to the salon. My hairdresser helps me take care of my hair bc I am horrible at it. Still figuring the hair thing out.

  10. Hey Hang!

Do you use these same products for both your morning and night routine? Would you recommend using just the same products for morning and night? For my night routine I use the products that my dermatologist recommended (which doesn’t seem to have an effect anymore for my oily acne prone skin). For my morning routine though I use the clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel and just started using two different lush cleanser alternately. I felt like the texture of my skin got worse though? I started getting a few bumps on my skin. I’m not sure if it’s because of the exfoliating effect of the cleanser which could be harsh for the skin to use everyday? It’s so hard for me to try out new products because my skin breaks out from most of the products that I try. The cetaphil cleanser and hydroboost gel sound appealing though! Thanks for sharing this post, I really learned a lot!

      Hey Rain!

I use the same products for morning and night but I only wash my face with water in the morning. Sometimes I would moisturize if I feel like my skin needs it. I think maybe your skin might be reacting to the different lush cleansers that you’re using alternatively. Personally, I would only stick with one and see how that works. If you’re using two new ones at the same time, you don’t know which one your skin doesn’t like. Maybe it doesn’t like either one or using both at the same time is too harsh. Skin care is honestly like a science experiment lol so try out one product at a time to see what works or what doesn’t.

I would talk to your dermatologist to find out what’s going on since they’re the professional but I keep my skin care routine very simple. I found that it works best for me.

  11. Hi Hang,

I just wanted to update and tell you thank you so much for this. I brought the products like a couple of weeks ago and i’ve been seeing a difference. The cetaphil cleanser doesn’t dry out my face like the noxema i was using was doing and the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel gave my skin that extra boost of moisture that it needed so my face thanks you. Lol. I really need this! Thank you again ☺

  12. Hang, do you have any suggestion for dark and pigmented skin? I have been living in Sri Lanka for almost 6 years to complete my med school and because of the sun here my skin has literally become so dark and uneven. I can see dark spots all over my face. Tried everything but it’s not improving. Pls let me know your suggestions if you have any 🙂 Thank you 😊

Have you tried any vitamin e creams? I had one from Vietnam and it worked really well but it didn’t have a label on it or anything 🙁 . I know vitamin e cream would help for sure though.
